Feline Advocacy

What do municipal shelters, rescue groups, humane societies, veterinary associations, and animal foundations have in common? Animals, obviously yet each one makes a unique contribution. The Denver Metro Shelter Alliance, of which RMACA is a member, has brought an amazingly diverse group of organizations together with an eye towards helping adoptable animals find homes. While this seems like a strange place for an organization that specializes in feral cats, RMACA has found common ground and consistent support at every turn. The Colorado Veterinary Medical Association requested our input in their development of a position statement on feral cats. A subcommittee of the Alliance developed a brochure listing low-cost spay/neuter resources for owned and feral cats in two languages. Citywide collection data now includes neutered ferals. Municipal shelters and humane societies recognize our efforts as complementary to their own. While the Animal Assistance Foundation works patiently to bridge and grow the interests of each organization, the shelters are working together to plan Denver's first ever all-feline education and adoption fair.

Through the Denver Metro Shelter Alliance and other advocacy efforts, RMACA has learned to appreciate both the limitations and contributions of every organization working to make a better world for all animals, and how much more we can all accomplish by working together.

Success Story

In honor of Feral Cat Day 2003, in only six days between October 13 and October 18, 2003, 138 feral cats were handled through the collaborative efforts of RMACA, Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital, Divine Felines mobile medical unit, and many dedicated citizens! more >
