Volunteer with RMACA

RMACA needs volunteers! Our organization is fairly small and our committed task is quite large. Volunteering is a great way to meet other people that truly care about cats, and it's a great learning experience. If you think you might be interested in volunteering with RMACA, please contact us at volunteer@rmaca.org or call (303) 623-0765. Rescue Volunteers

Trappers

Trappers are a key part of RMACA. We provide the traps and training for the purpose of spay/neuter and return. Trapping isn't hard to learn, but it does require a special dedication. Our trappers feel immense accomplishment knowing they directly prevent countless unwanted kittens from being born while improving the lives of feral cats who ask for so little.

Trappers:
  • catch feral or stray cats in humane traps
  • transport captured cats to a veterinary facility for spay/neuter, testing, and vaccines, or other treatment if necessary
  • coordinate with RMACA's rescue coordinator to place tame cats and adoptable kittens into foster homes
  • maintain records of all trapping and veterinary activities
Colony Caretakers

Colony caretakers maintain a feral colony of cats with assistance from RMACA. Feral colonies typically consist of 5 to 20 cats living in a public environment.

Colony caretakers:
  • provide neutered feral colonies with food and fresh water, at least 2-3 times per week
  • report any new cats in the colony to RMACA's rescue coordinator to be trapped and altered
  • report any injured cats in the colony to RMACA's rescue coordinator to be trapped and rehabilitated (if possible)
Emergency Responders

Occasionally RMACA is requested to provide immediate, emergency help to save the life of a cat or kitten in danger. Often RMACA's rescue coordinator responds to emergencies, but we also seek volunteer emergency responders to provide assistance if necessary.

Spay-Neuter Clinics

RMACA provides administrative assistance for the Divine Feline mobile spay-neuter clinic and for other planned, collaborative spay-neuter events. RMACA volunteers handle check-in and pick-up for these events, help ensure that the proper paperwork is completed, and may do other adminstrative tasks as necessary.

Adoption Volunteers

Foster Homes

RMACA needs dedicated foster parents for feral and orphaned kittens and tame strays. RMACA limits the number of cats or kittens in a foster home in order to provide the best possible environment for socialization and adoption.

Foster homes must have an area in their home such as an extra bedroom where they can isolate new cats until they can be examined by a veterinarian. Foster parents need some flexibility in their work schedule to take cats to veterinary appointments as needed.

Many of the kittens we rescue have never known a human touch. Feral kittens require time and patience to learn trust, but taming is one of the most rewarding things a human being can experience. Likewise, helping traumatized or injured adult cats find their way back to a safe world brings a sense of joy unlike any other!

Foster homes:
  • provide loving care for foster cats and/or kittens at home until they get adopted
  • transport foster cats to veterinary appointments as needed and adoption displays on a regular basis
  • provide information on cats to webmaster and foster coordinator
  • maintain records of all fostering and veterinary activities
  • socialize feral kittens, resocialize abandoned cats, or provide recouperative care for injured or ill cats
Adoption Displays

RMACA's adoptable cats and kittens live in foster homes while awaiting permanent homes. They meet the public at regularly scheduled adoption displays. Adoption display volunteers and adoption counselors are crucial to our organization and always in short supply. These volunteers staff the adoption displays at PetSmart and/or answer calls to the adoption phone line or email.

Adoption volunteers:
  • attend adoption displays at PetsMart and/or other locations
  • provide information about adoptable cats and kittens to interested persons
  • refer potential adoptors to adoption counselors for further screening
Adoption counselors:
  • take calls from potential adoptors
  • interview potential adoptors
  • work with potential adoptors and foster homes to facilitate adoptions
Fundraising Volunteers

Fundraising Volunteers typically volunteer a few times each year in fundraising activities. These volunteers do not actively deal with cats, but are very important in helping us to maintain our budget for veterinary expenses and administrative funding.

Our fundraising events encompass a wide variety of activities, including book fairs, bake sales, garage sales, working at Invesco Field, Santa Paws, the annual Valentine's cat show presented by Front Range Cat Fanciers, Inc., and fairs such as the People's Fair and the Cherry Creek Art Festival.

Outreach Volunteers

Outreach Volunteers typically volunteer a few times a year to represent RMACA at local educational events and public outreach events, such as 2004's KidSpree. These volunteers may handle cats at these events, but typically interact more with the public.

Carpenters/Builders/Handymen

Handymen and women can help feral cat colonies by building shelters, feeding stations, or special traps from plans supplied by RMACA. Our foster cats also appreciate cat trees!

Veterinarians and Vet Techs

Veterinarians and vet techs can provide services for feral cats in countless ways. You may be able to provide spay/neuter or medical care at reduced cost, provide a few free neuters each month, volunteer your time at a feral neutering event, consult on unusual medical conditions, or be available for relatively rare emergency situations. RMACA fully understands the financial burdens and expectations that vets and techs face each day, and will work to ensure the best scenario for you and our cats.

Administrative Volunteers/Special Skills

RMACA is a very active organization that needs accountants, lawyers, advertisers, marketers, photographers, mailers, grant writers, computer whizzes, and more. If you have a skill, trade, or contacts that you think might be helpful to RMACA, we'd like to hear from you.

Board Members

RMACA is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Becoming an RMACA director is a great way to hone business skills and meet a variety of different people, all while serving the community.

Ways to Contribute

There are many ways to help RMACA continue to care for feral and stray cats in the Denver Metro area.

Success Story

"Late in September 2000 we lost Cider, a heroic kitty companion, the kind legends are made of, to FIV and old age. He was 18 years old. My second daughter so loved this cat that it was very difficult for her to ever allow herself the joy of experiencing another feline relationship. However, cats were so much a part of her nature that after about a year she began to consider the idea and we thought about giving her a kitten for her October birthday." more >
